How did our ancestors develop harakeke dyes?

Aim

To understand that the development of a method to dye muka involves scientific processes.

The method for dyeing harakeke has been passed down over hundreds of years by our ancestors. Many of these dyes and processes are similar to those in other countries. However, our ancestors developed these in isolation (without any help from overseas). There must have been a time when these dyes were developed by our ancestors.
